Superbowl XLII

This game will be played on the 3rd of February 2008 at 6:18 pm (East Time) in Unviversity of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Tom Petty and the Heartbrakers will perform during the half-time. I think it will be a wonderful show. Mary J. Blige and Maroon5 will also perform during the festivities around the Superbowl. In fact, their are parties the day after the game and just after the game.

I hope you will enjoy the playoffs and the Superbowl. In France you can watch the two conference's finals and the Superbowl on France 4 and France 2.
My pronostic is a Pats victory against the Green Bay Packers. And I'm sure that the MVP will be Tom Brady.

Bye bye and GO PATRIOTS!

A Fantastic team: The New England Patriots

Hello everyone,
I'm going to tell you about the best NFL's team this season: The New England Patriots.

This team plays in Foxborough, Massachusetts ( near Boston). They play in the AFC east division. They are usually called "the Pats" by their fans.
The Patriots results this season are simply amazing. After 12 games, they have 12 victories!
They have a point average of 39.1 which is naturally the best in the NFL this season.

Gillette stadium: home of the New England Patriots

Pats Quarterback, Tom Brady #12, is one of the best ones in NFL this season, he passed for 41 touchdowns!

Tom Brady is now becoming a superstar in the USA!

This team is already qualified for the playoffs and sure to be division-champion. They have 12 victories and the second in their division, the Buffalo Bills, have 6 victories and there are only 4 games remaining.
So you have a good chance to see this team in the SuperBowl in February!

This team is so strong because of its very good offensive players:

Like Randy Moss #81, Wide Receiver, who scored 17 touchdowns!

He is here scoring a wonderful touchdown.

And also like Laurence Maroney #39 who is a very good Running Back.

He is here scoring a touchdown after an amazing rush against the Buffalo Bills.

And to finish this post, let's have a quick look on the wondeful Patriots cheerleaders!

I will talk to you later about chearleading in the NFL!
Thank you for reading me and bye bye.

The NFL

Hello everyone,
today I'm going to present the National Football League (NFL).

The NFL is the most important and the most prestigious professional American football league.
To understand how important this championship is in the United States, you have to know that it has the world's most important attendance in stadiums. Actually, during 2006 season, the NFL had an average attendance of 67,738! It means that, in average, every game of every week was watched by 67,738 people in the stadium.
To make a comparaison, at the same time, the French soccer championship called the "Ligue 1 Orange" had an average attendance of 21,817 and the French rugby championship called the "Top 14" had 10,549.

A game night at Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans.

The NFL is composed of 32 teams, which are "franchises" bought by the city of the team. Every year, the NFL teams are the same, there is no promotion/relegation system like in Europe.

NFL teams are separated in the two conferences of 16 teams: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).
Both of these conferences are divided in the four divisions: North, South, East and West.

There are two different parts during this championship: the regular season and the playoffs.

The Regular Season

From September to the end of the year, the regular season is composed of 17 football weeks. Each of the 32 teams plays 16 games and has a "bye week" (week without game). The organisation of the games is a little bit complicated to know but I'll try to explain it to you.
A team plays the three other teams of its division twice which involves 6 games. In a conference, every division is connected to another one and a team plays each team of this division once which involves 4 games. Every division is also connected to another division in the other conference and a team plays each team in this division once which involves 4 games. The two final games are played by a team against the teams of the two same-conference division remaining that finished in the same position during the previous season.
After that, in the beginning of January, the playoffs begin.

The Playoffs

The playoffs are a 12 team tournament, including 6 teams of each conference, to determine the NFL champion. In each conference, the four division-champions and the two best other teams ( they get a wild card) play the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs, called the "Wild card round" is played by every team except the two best division-champions. In each conference, the third division-champion plays the worst wild card team and the fourth division-champion plays the best Wild card team. After this round, the two winners play the two first division-champions, and after these two games, with only two teams still running in each conference, they go to the Conference championship of their conference. Then, the two conference-champions play each other in the biggest game of the year in a neutral stadium, the SUPERBOWL.

You should know that the Superbowl is watched on television by more than 50% of the American population (141 million in 2006) and it's broadcast in more than 200 countries. It's the second most important sport game in the world, just after the soccer World Cup final.

In 2006, the Indianapolis Colts won the Superbowl against the Chicago Bears thanks to their magical Quarterback: Peyton Manning.

Peyton Manning was elected "MVP" ( Most Valuable Player) of this game!

Introduction to American Football

Hello everyone,
today I will give you an introduction to this fantastic sport.

The first thing you need to know is that this sport is the most popular one in the USA. Its principal professional championship, the NFL ( National Football League), is watched by millions of Americans every week-end on TV and in stadiums. I will tell you more about this championship in another post.

An american football stadium:

Main rules

American Football rules are unknown in France because that sport is not very popular and its rules are a little bit complicated, but I'll try to explain it to you the best I can.

This sport is played on a 100 yard field ( 91,44 meters) divided by 10 yard portions.
On each side of the field, there is a "crossbar" and behind it, the "end zone", the place you have to go to score a "touchdown"!

An American football team is always composed of 11 players. But, in fact, there are three different units playing during a game: the offense, the defense and special units (used for different types of kicks). A game is 60 minutes long, divided by four 15 minutes periods.

The game begins with a kickoff, when one team kicks the ball as far as possible. The other team has to catch the ball and then they have four attempts (called "downs") to advance the ball 10 yards forward. If they have not done that after four downs, the ball is given to the first team and it's called a "turnover on downs". If the team who caught the ball made a 10 yard progression, an offense starts where they stop adv
ancing the ball. The offense unit of the first team goes just in front of the defense unit of the other which is called "the line of scrimmage"

A line of scrimmage:

At this moment, an offensive player passes the ball between his legs to the quarterback, the most important offensive player, this action is a "snap". And the offensive team tries to gain 10 yards again, passing the ball to a "running back" or making a long pass to a "wide receiver" ( I will explain later in detail what the different roles of the players in the offense unit are in another post). And again, the team has four downs to do that.
An important thing you should know is that when the ball is on the ground, the game stops. So, instead of intercepting the ball, another way for the defense team to get possession is to push the offensive player who has the ball on the floor which is called "to tackle".

Scoring.

In American Football, there are three different ways of scoring.

- The Touchdown (6 points)
To score a touchdown, a player has to be in the end zone with the ball. So he can receive the ball from a pass or run into the end zone. Even if the player's feet are not in the zone, if the ball is in, he scores a touchdown! After a touchdown, the scoring team places the ball on the 3-yard line and tries to kick it over the "crossbar". They can score an extra-point ( one point).

A player kicking for an extra-point:

- The Field Goal (3 points)
This is when a player kicks the ball over the crossbar, usually attempted during the fourth down.

- The Safety ( 2 points)
A safety is scored when a defensive player tackles an opponent in his own end zone.

Now you know the main rules of American football. But there are lots of things to know to understand a game
very well... There are lots of strategies called "plays" and that's why the coach of an American football team is very important.

I will show you other things about this amazing sport very soon!
Bye
